8 GB just isn't enough, and you'll be swapping constantly, hurting performance and wearing out your SSD. When macOS uses a couple GB, a browser can easily use hundreds of MB per tab, Electron-based apps like Discord or Slack use another GB each, pro apps or IDEs use another couple GB apiece. (You can also pay for an upgraded SOC in the Air, though that brings it close to the Pro's price.)ĭoubling the RAM will make a huge difference, though. In practice probably less, since again it'll be rare to push the GPU to 100% load. The GPU core is, well, at best a 14% improvement by definition. You really need something like a render job, ML training, or huge codebase compilation to notice the difference. Anecdotally, I played with an Air at the Apple Store, opening Office, several WebGL demos and YouTube videos, FCPX, Logic, and an Apple Arcade game, and it didn't even hit 60 ☌. Per a couple videos/articles, the Pro's fan provides 20-30% higher performance at most, which is when you're pushing the CPU to 100% for tens of minutes at a time.
